How to install a mutator

On forum and by other means like Msn Messenger or Google Talk, many people keep asking how to install a specific mutator. Since we have no time to write new mods because you people keep asking us all, we blocked everybody and wrote a tutorial to install all mods for home use and how to install them on a server!

Before we start throwing difficult words at you, we first pay attention to the folder- and file structure. After that we explain how to install different types of mutators. Make sure you do not post any questions on our forum before reading the contents of this page.

File Structure

When Unreal Tournament Demo 99 is installed, the installation path is C:\TournamentDemo by default. In this folder we can see the following folders, as shown in this list:

C:\TournamentDemo

\Cache

When playing online, you might see the message Downloading 'Soldierskins_Hkil' or any other name. All those packages are stored in the \Cache folder. These files are standard deleted when not used for a period of around 30 days. In UnrealTournament.ini this amount of time can be extended to any valid number of days (PurgeCacheDays=999 under [Core.System]). The files have the extention *.uxx.

\Help

Normally a mutator, skin or manual contains a text file called "Readme" or "Manual". These files are just text-files with information about the author, mutator and/or skin. There are no specific filetypes, but most common types are *.txt, *.htm, *.nfo and sometimes *.jpg.

\Logs

When starting your own server, a log of each session is stored. When you use a mutator like CSHP, additional log files are created. All these log files are stored in this folder. The log from the last game you have played is normally stored in the \System folder and is called UnrealTournament.log or UCC.log. These files have the extention *.log and *.tmp and can be opened with Notepad.

\Maps

Obviously, this folder contains the maps for UTdemo. Normally, maps have the extention *.unr. However, this was a waste of text because additional maps don't work in UTdemo (yet).

\Music

All music tracks are held in this folder. Music files can be of any name, and have the file type convention of *.umx. In Mod Planet we have seen adding music to UTdemo maps is possible. However, because most people turn down UTdemo music and replace it for other music with the mediaplayer, this is not a commonly used part of a mutator.

\Sounds

Sound packages exist in groups of sounds that can be used for many purposes. These include menu sounds, annoucers, ambient map effects and weapon sounds. Soundpackages will normally have many sounds and will be grouped by purpose. Extention is commonly *.uax.

\System

The system folder contains all system files for UTdemo. This folder contains at least the following extentions. Configuration files can be created and used by any mutator and is usually recognized as *.ini or "Configuration FileType".

The most important package type is the *.u package. "Upackages" contain the game code. The .u files can also import sounds (*.wav), textures(*.pcx or *.bmp) and models (*.3d or *.3ds).

Also, *.int files are files that can notify the game itself where to find the specific mutator, skin or model. These .int files hold the key to activate/use a certain mutator or skin.

\Textures

Texture packages hold textures for map walls, skins for models, and graphics for the HUD and menus. Textures normally contain a variety of textures which will be grouped according to their use in the game enviroment. Texture packages have the extention *.utx and can be viewed/edited in UnrealED.

Downloads

When a file is downloaded from our Download Database, you will notice that the download itself is packed in a *.zip file. This is a standard archive format for (and not conclusive) Windows XP. In this *.zip file you may encounter subfolders like \System and \Textures, or all files unsorted.

Another possibility is the extention *.umod. This is some kind of self-extracting archive that automatically puts all files in the right place. However, this format is not used very often anymore.
